What goes into the number
Climate zones and recommended R-values come from DOE and ENERGY STAR's published guidance for the 2021 IECC. Heating and cooling degree days come from NOAA's 1991-2020 climate normals, matched to each county's nearest reporting station. Installed cost and national energy rates are sourced from published 2026 contractor-cost data and EIA rate tables. Every source is named in the methodology guide.
An estimate, honestly labeled
These are planning numbers for a typical 1,000 sq ft attic, not a quote for any specific house — actual attic size, access, and existing insulation condition change the real bill. Energy rates used are national averages (18¢/kWh electricity, $19.83/Mcf gas), not your specific utility rate, and this site says so on every page rather than implying more precision than the underlying data supports.
